I was locally raised in northern California. I first heard of capoeira from my friend Aisha Walls (Amazonas) in 1993 while I was living in Covelo. I took my first class from Mestre Rony in 1995 in Ukiah. It was the greatest feeling of empowerment, community and I even learned to play an instrument. Five months later I received my first cordoa. I have played in rodas and taken classes in Boston, New Hampshire, Berkely, San Francisco, Santa Cruz and Maui. I started teaching beginning adult classes in 1997 and started teaching children’s class in 2000. Since then I have learned about children’s development in midlines, vestibular systems, and attention spans. I’ve learned you have to make a game of everything. In class you have to keep changing and adapting to whom and how many are in class, we play such games as capoeira dodge ball, freeze tag and the tiger-tail roda.
Today I’m working on getting my AS in early childhood education at Sonoma state through Mendocino College. I also work with the Bohemian player’s theater group. I’m also a member of MUFF(Mendocino unified feminist federation) I’m also happily married and taking two years off work to raise my baby girl Lilith.
